New calculator from government to fight rising cost of living

A new tool has revealed the outrageous costs of starting life in Australia, and students are advised to be realistic about their expectations when planning a move Down Under.

The Cost of Living Calculator, developed by Austrade’s Learn Australia, helps students to assess what different ways of living in the country might cost. Among the features of the interactive calculator is allowing users to compare housing arrangements and transport options across cities. The tool also shows students what it costs for things such as eating out, going to the gym, getting a haircut, and a mobile phone plan in each area in Australia.

However, prices are less than affordable for those seeking comfortable living arrangements, with the “moderate” choices setting students back over $1412 per week in Sydney. That cost is compared to $1,325 in Melbourne, $1,352 in Brisbane, and $1082 in Adelaide.
